Fur Rondy in Anchorage Alaska

Fur Rondy is a great time of year in Anchorage. Fur Rendevous began in 1936 as a three day sports tournament. It has changed over the years to include changes to the name. Today, Fur Rendezvous is known as Fur Rondy. There are many fun events that anyone can participate in. For more info browse to www.furrondy.net.

As a kid I remember parades on 4th Ave included tanks and marching soldiers, fur auctions and sled dog races. The highlight for me was the sled dog races. I remember Doc Lombard from Wayland, Massachusetts and George Attla from Huslia, AK racing a total of seventy five miles, at twenty five miles a day. The newspapers would portray the two men as fierce competitors but in fact they were good friends who happened to race each other. As a kid I remember sled dogs breeds as Alaskan Malamute and Siberian Husky. Modern breeds include Greyster and Labrador Husky. Some of the modern breeds may not remind me of the sled dogs of my childhood but make no mistake about it, these new breeds are fast.

February is a great time for a winter festival in Anchorage, Alaska. Join the fun.
