ABOUT RICK’S ALASKA TRAVELS
Meet Rick Stevens
AKA Grumpy Grandpa
My name is Rick
I was born and raised in Anchorage, Alaska. Ethnically, I’m Alaska Native. I’m also known as Grumpy Grandpa. There’s a story behind how I acquired the nickname Grumpy Grandpa. If we meet in person I will tell you the story.
I’ve spent most of my life in Anchorage but I’ve lived elsewhere for a few years. As a kid I spent two years in Renton, Washington. To this day I have a fondness for the Pacific Northwest. After high school I enlisted in the United States Marine Corps for three years. I was stationed in California and Okinawa but Alaska was always home. Alaska is isolated from the rest of the United States and I couldn’t wait to get out of Alaska and see the world. After seeing some of the world, my enlistment was up I couldn’t wait to return to Anchorage.

Over the decades, while working in Anchorage I developed a list of restaurants I liked to frequent. People nowadays seem to be more inquisitive about Alaska and as I travel in and out of Alaska they want info on dining, where to stay and things to do. I’m developing this website to answer those questions. In high school, I had a small Olympus rangefinder camera and I took many rolls of film with that little camera.
Over the past couple of years, I’ve rekindled that love of photography and will post photos and a blurb about the photos/videos of my travels in the website blog. I love to travel and I’ve been to Japan, Taiwan, Guam, Hong Kong (while under British rule), Canada, Mexico, United Kingdom, France, Spain, Germany, Italy, United Arab Emirates, and Kuwait. I’m looking forward to adding countries to my list.
My goal with this website is: one, to have fun and two, to provide useful information to tourists who visit my hometown.
